Throwing a plate on the pottery wheel can seem a bit daunting the first time you try it. Making a plate on the pottery wheel really isn"e;t that hard; there are just a couple of details that have to be done right to make the process a lot easier.
Follow the plate throwing steps in this video to make it easier. Here is what most people struggle with at first when trying to throw a plate out of clay:
- Spreading the clay out across the bat correctly - Getting the thickness of the clay right - Leaving enough clay for a rim and creating a rim without it collapsing - Cutting the plate off the wheel - Drying the plate correctly by flipping it over on another bat so the bottom can dry to leather hard - Trimming the plate on the wheel - Drying it upside down to prevent cracking
